Ian Hunter - The Horse's Mouth

Want to hear it straight from the Horse's Mouth? Ask your question here.

Issue #66, Part 2 - July 16, 2006

Neal B: I really don't know either. His Mum still lives there, maybe she'll know. Sounds like a local council snafu. They're so good at messing things up.

Kathy Machado: 'Very nice and dedicated without scary undertones.'

Heather Sandra Blues: Keep 'The Rant Band'. Although she says she doesn't yet know the meaning of 'Shrunken Heads.' Clever girl.

Bob Barnes: Hello Bob - always good to hear from you. Thanks for the analysis and information. Interesting; it may help.

Frenchy wants more details on my relationship with Todd Rundgren. We get on well. He's an extremely intelligent individual and a talented bugger too!

Kelly Wallace: 'Shrunken Heads' gets Kelly's vote - tying in with our favourite Pirate - Johnny Depp.

William White: 'I'm the idiot who travels from Sacramento to the UK to see the band.' Aw c'mon, Bill. We're worth it!!

Have you noticed these disturbing little Americanisms creeping into the dialog: 'nope' - 'yup' - and now ' aw c'mon'. Sorry chaps.

Roy Mitchell: 'My name is Roy Mitchell. I'm an avid fan who grew up in Mississippi listening to you on WZZQ. I am now a 46-year-old attorney with a family. Thanks for the inspiration. As a teenager in Mississippi I was constantly ridiculed for being a MTH fan. Today, my 15 year old daughter heard me playing 'One of the Boys' on my Gibson. She asked me to teach her how to play it. Thanks for everything.' And so it goes, Roy.

Mgdriver says Alice Cooper has a radio show every night and tonight he played my version of 'Cleveland Rocks'. Thanks Alice.

Jake Almond: 'Hurry back to the UK. I miss following you around with my old man. I join the Marines next August, so I'm hoping to do some serious head banging before then.' And afterwards as well, I presume, young Jake.

Rick Lake: 'Do you think the next generations of CDs will go 5.1?' All depends on the market.

Bucks Burnett: 'Great to see Robert Plant and you at the Beacon! Proof he has good taste. I'm a huge Zeppelin fan (Page and Plant are in my Mr. Ed Fan Club) so it's great to see two golden haired worlds collide. Good onya, Bucks.

Greg Boggs: There have been offers, but I decided to sit tight until I get this CD sorted out.

S.B. 'OK no tour until 2007, but how about a XMAS show in CT or NYC?' Too legless!

Alice sends me a couple of emails that correspond with that part of my brain which has deliberately or accidentally lain dormant for the best part of my life; I aim to keep it that way.

'Do 'Idiot Wind'.' Why do it when it's already done, and what a great performance. Great song - once of my favourites.

Abe VanderLaan: 'Hi Mr. Hunter, I'm 14 and have YNAWAS and I would like to know where you got the idea for Standing In My Light.' It was loosely based on a manager I'd just fired.

Jon White: I think England have a great team. I didn't like the coaching and still don't, but I'm just a fan. I think it would be nice if Wayne Rooney learned another word, thereby doubling his vocabulary and I think we were unfortunate in that Gerrard and especially Lampard seemed out of form. I know a lot has been made of their incompatibility in the midfield - maybe that's the reason, but Lampard's lethal power just wasn't there. The heat? Maybe. I did agree with what the refs were doing. The game is in danger and it has to be cleaned up or it will become more ugly. You do have to score goals to win. I think the penalty finale is an abortion. It should be decided on goal average, making the teams attack more, in my opinion. The yanks simply weren't up to it. Who knows?

Dickie: I'm sorry to have led you on a wild goose chase, but Oreoles do not exist. I just made it up. Mick lost his guitars on Long Island.

Willie fi Glasgi: What on earth does NWTR have to do with Scotland? It's time you chaps move down and do what you do best - run England. Har har!

Stano: 'Alice' was a long time ago. I must have been thinking of somebody because there's a load of words, but I've forgotten. Everton for the FA cup next season? You'll get good odds on that. Bet now.

Geoff Bryant: 'Is there a DVD of the Arthur Lee benefit?' Unfortunately, there isn't. Eagle wanted to do it and were willing to pay a handsome amount, but some of the artists were under re-recording restrictions and so it didn't happen. Rather sad; particularly for Arthur.

Phil Taylor: Keep the 'Rant Band' title.

Tony B: 'Why, oh why is Overnight Angels so fantastic? I love Rob Rawlinson's bass on it. Why don't you do any of it live?' Not too keen on the record, actually, Tony, although Rob was (is) a great bass player. On the other matter, consider yourself considered. Have a great tour - regards to the chaps.

Jim Bourgeois: Glad you like it, Jim. I shall endeavor to persist.

Cary Collinson says Captain Sensible (of the Damned) claims (whilst still a fan) to have tried to snatch my glasses off my head during a show in Croyden, only to find they were somehow wired to my head. The resulting yank cracked my head into the mike and blood gushed from my mouth. Apparently, I then screamed for the head of the perpetrator, as you do. 'Is this true?' Ah, the stuff of legend. I'm almost inclined to remember it but I don't. I can't remember ever bleeding from the mouth on stage. His memory is probably worse than mine. Is this the chap that dropped his trousers at Mick's Memorial gig and then inquired as to the whereabouts of the bar? Never saw that, but it tickled me.

Adrian Perkins: I don't remember this either, so I wouldn't be of much use.

Pat listened to 'All is Forgiven' for the first time Monday night. 'Twenty listens later - so beautiful!' Thanks, Pat. I like that one too.

Lynne's vote is for 'Shrunken Heads.'

Pat: 'Sorry, I'm late. Happy B'day.'

Pat: 'Who sang the high harmony on 'When Will I Be Loved?' you or Robert Plant? Me.

James Boyd got the 'All the Good Ones Are Taken' video through I-Tunes. I'm told a DVD is being put together by Sony, but I've heard nothing recently.

Bill Carter: Fred left the Savages around '61. I met him in a pub when he was back on steel erecting in the Northampton area. Paul Nicholas took over for him in the Savages. Fred didn't really leave Sutch. He fell off a stage and was in Hospital for a while - and that was it. I'd been the singer in H.H. when Fred joined; and then it became F.F. Lee and the Shriekers. Later on, Pete Phillips joined us when we started playing the Star Club and other clubs in Germany. Miller Anderson was on guitar by this time. I did back Billy Fury for a short time on bass. Can't remember who the guys were.

Matt in Chi town: P.O. Box 245, Bridgewater, CT 06752. Many Thanks.

Gary: Nice one!

Dave - Albany: Part 1) Yes. Part 2) No (to my knowledge). Part 3) They were here last weekend.

Pat: Yeah, I'm fine with 'The Other Man'. I'm not in total sync with the lyric, but that's the way it came.

Birney: Usually, nowadays, people who actually want interviews are pretty well informed. Some, surprisingly so, but there's always the odd twit. It's just part of the business.

Ian McMillan: 'In the age of plastic records I bought your cracking single 'England Rocks'. Just wondered which idea came first, Cleveland or England? Cleveland. 'Love RANT. You read this country dead right. RIP OFF BRITAIN'.

Jon Kelly saw us at Birkenhead five years ago and loved it. 'However, with a lot of retro bands from the 70's coming back again, what are the chances of MTH?' I always thought it was neat not to do what everybody else does. That's why I don't eat McDonalds or go to Madonna concerts.

Eric Hemphill: That's what life's for and about.

Matt Nojonen: You're good Matt - you're really good. Can't you get this stuff in a newspaper or something? It's unique to you.

Chris Brown: It's down to him. That's all there is to it.

Joe: Thanks, Joe. Too blushy to print!

Rooster: Yes, it does sound like a lot and it was discussed and I can't quite remember how we left it. I remember talking to Mick, but he was in the middle of something else. In the final analysis, I feel we would be a cover band covering ourselves. We were wild and desperate then, and of course we're older and a little wiser now. Best left where it was.

Mike Tuscon: Catch up - catch up!

Kevin Seifert: Now here's a guy who's happening! From somewhat 'hippy' beginnings, Kevin's wound up golfing with two Presidents, testifying in Congress and running a large, global medical business. All Kev wants to do is play Mott and me and perhaps meet up for lunch. Well, I've got your number Kevin and I must admit I'm tempted! It's great to keep the kid inside, don't lose him!

Ray Waters: The autumn tour was to have been 9 dates. I don't know yet, as to how many spring dates there will be. We'll be sure to keep Worthen in mind.

Art: 'How important was 'wardrobe' within MTH, and now with the Rant Band? It was really important to MTH, but that was the early seventies and it was in and we were in! It did seem very important at the time. I was pretty unlovely at the inception of MTH, but Buff and Pete, in particular, were well into the way we looked. I Iearned from them. We were hairy and scruffy when we started (and we had little money) but as we moved through the ranks it began to make us feel special if we tarted ourselves up a bit. Some of it was plain daft, but if you can't be daft at that age, when can you? It came and it went. Nowadays, the guys in the Rant Band never talk about it. They just turn up and they always look fine so it's never discussed. I still like putting on clothes I feel good in before going on. I guess it's part of the guy on stage; it's part of the ritual. 'Do you go fishing?' Only for frogs.

Bucks Burnett: None too happy with the old FBI stickers.

Bryan: Never met Willie. Ronno's family are fine.

Jasin Rubin: Loving the remasters of MTH. Especially slower version of 'Honaloochie Boogie'. I prefer the released take, but I was wondering how it evolved in the studio?' Search me.

Tim Kearns: Sounds like you had a great time in its way and it's definitely something you're not going to forget. Tim was in North Korea for three months teaching. Tim says the North Koreans thought that Celine Dion was the true representation of western music. Tim said he told them she was **** and they were most shocked! Kim had better be cool.

Jackie R.: Yes, I did have my shades on; that could have been it. Jackie sends her regards to Andy.

Karen: Ah, the old Liverpool Stadium. I'll never forget the smells in the dressing rooms.

Alex: Can't remember.

Brett: Syd Barrett - Rest in Peace.

Bart: 'Who have not played with that you'd like to play with the most? Bob.

Jim Davenport: 'Come to St. Louis'. If an offer comes in we'll be more than glad to look at it!

Kath Foster: No UK dates this year - next spring.

Clyde Hartman: All depends on what deal and who it was with and who was managing etc. etc. Susie gets some royalties, but not what she should. World Cup. I thought about going. When the dog bit me the doctor at the hospital was going and I thought maybe I'll go with him. I'd love the games - it's just the schlep.

Tim: 'If you were asked to play one song of yours to someone who was not familiar with your work, with just guitar or piano, what song would it be?' Picasso.

John Cook: Did I ever meet Syd Barrett? Not that I recall. Am I a Pink Floyd fan? They're so bloody good, aren't they. And on their own terms.

Alan K: 'Do you own a copy of Overend's 'Shout it All Out'? If so, when was the last time you played it?' I don't really listen much at all - especially old stuff.

James Fae Glasgow: 'I missed it last time - please fix another Glasgow gig.' Ah - now the - why did you miss it! No then!!

Michele Falbow: Keep the 'Rant' name.

Daniel Giboury: Daniel wishing me Happy B'day. Daniel's BD on the 2nd of June which apparently was the Marquis de Sade's BD as well. He was pretty creative too! Daniel says in the latest issue of 'Rock 'N' Fold' (France's oldest music mag) there were no less than four review of 'the man' (moi). They mention an interview in the next issue (August 2006). 'Is it true?' I don't really know.

Peter Jordan: 'Mention of 'Invisible Strings' reminds me of the line, 'I'd give anything to meet the angel who sends invisible ink to my invisible pen'. Do you still think of the gift as an angel, and more to the point, does Trudi?' We think it's a gift - otherwise we'd all be doing it!

That's all for now, folks!!

I think I did them all except for those that didn't need answering. Keep 'em coming and I'll keep 'em coming too.
